Celebrity Death Match: Blackberry Storm vs. The iPhone
Thursday, November 20, 2008 at 09:00PM
The most anticipated celebrity death match is about to take place. The iPhone came out…then came out again new and improved. Although it did take the mobile industry by “storm”(pun intended), there are still many skeptics and die hard Blackberry fanatics that didn’t quite buy into the new trendy touch screen technology. As time has gone on, and more and more touch screen mobile phones come out (The only noteworthy phone worth mentioning is HTC and T-Mobile teaming up to release the T-Mobile G1), Blackberry creator, Research In Motion (RIM) Ltd. realized that with the release of touch screen Blackberry, they could tighten their grip and strangle the Smartphone market - The Blackberry Storm.
So how do the two compare? Before I delve into that topic, what I really want to rant about is the fact that all of these companies just don’t seem to get it. There are certain things that tech savvy people (the very people who use Blackberrys and iPhones) want - High speed. So why did Apple intially release the iPhone without 3G technology and why doesn’t the Storm have WIFI access? They can talk budget, timing, or aliens taking over Earth…bottom line is the consumer is right and we want high speed! Now that I got that out…let’s be honest…a lot people are still going to buy it.
Now the play by play of the death match…
You have already read the first point. No WIFI access for the Blackberry Storm. Although, until cities start adopting city-wide WIFI access (which may be closer to reality than you realize), this isn’t a huge issue. It does have 3G technology and RIM has assured that there won’t be problems like the hiccups that happened with the iPhone 3G. Look at the chart to the left though…notice how point for point, they pretty much are the same. If this were an actual boxing match, I think ultimately the Storm would win the decision. But they would go the distance. What it really boils down to is the user…You. There’s a lot of us that aren’t even iPhone users that know how inconvenient the whole picture texting is on the iPhone. It’s the biggest complaint I hear out of iPhone users. Will the Storm prove to have some universal annoying qualities…or lack of??
The determining factor in this celebrity death match will be the user interface and navigation. Is it smooth/seamless? Is it user friendly? Is it complicated or simplified? Do I need an Engineering degree to learn how to work it? ‘Tis true that there is an adjustment period with any new device or software that you start using. But if done right, that adjustment period can be very minimal.
Historically, the Blackberry family of mobile devices has proven to be optimized for the business man/woman…it’s the closest thing we have to a mobile PC. Based on that fact, I would imagine that RIM did a phenomenal job in the design of the user interface and navigation. Translation - I think the Storm will not only blow the iPhone out of the water, but it will also set the stage for the next generation of mobile devices - and maybe flying cars! ;-)

And who needs Wi-Fi when you just pay for the internet/email plan monthly anyhoo?
iPhones suck.
Can't forward text.
Can't send pictures..
Can't receive pictures..
the touch screen is horrible, there are barely any apps, and its confusing.
Iphone is incredible...and theyre fixing the text issue...along with many others. the update comes out next month and it's like getting a brand new free phone! I'd like to see storm give you a free software update.
WIFI is amazing because you can use Skype and call people for free.
Apple is amazing at making their products simple to use. one button on the iphone takes you back home no matter where you are on the phone.
