Pop the Cherry - Hulu the First of Its Kind in Superbowl

In a press release this week, the NBC/News Corp. video site, Hulu, announced that they will have a 30 second ad spot in this year’s Superbowl.  If you recall, GoDaddy.com shocked the world with their racy ad spot in the Superbowl a few years ago.  Hulu follows their lead in hopes that the exposure will boost their viewership in the ever-growing and competetive market of “Internet TV.”  Obviously the ideas behind the creative were not revealed, but Hulu promised to reveal “the secret behind Hulu.”

The real secret of this story is not what the commercial will be about, but what Hulu paid for the ad spot…if anything.  With NBC having partial equity in Hulu, there’s a very good chance they got the ole “friend” discount or maybe even a freebie.  Surprised?  Well I would have been too, especially with the $3 million price tag on 30 second ads.  But we are all aware of the suffering economy, so it’s no surprise to hear reports that the price tag on ad spots has dropped in recent days approaching the game.  That said, I doubt that NBC is sacrificing too much by giving the ad spot to Hulu at a discounted rate…or even for free.

This is one of the few times that I would say no matter what kind of commercial you put up, most likely you will get web traffic…it’s a Superbowl ad!!  BUT….if Hulu does come up with something that is as eye-catching as GoDaddy’s racy commercial from a few years back, they could be the big winner in this year’s Superbowl.
